What is HiTest?
HiTest is now named PacWest Silicon. They are a Canadian company that would produce silicon in Newport, Washington. Pend Oreille Public Utility District (PUD) sold 186 acres of public land to HiTest for the facility and failed to legally notify local citizens of their intent.
What is a Smelter?
A smelter is an installation or factory extracting metal from ore by a process of heating and melting. Materials are heated to temperatures in excess of 3,000°F in a submerged arc furnace.
What pollution would the smelter cause?
Carbon Dioxide CO2 – 320,000 tons Greenhouse Gas – e.g. 65,000 cars driving 11,000 miles in a circle around the town of Newport.
Sulfur Dioxide SO2 – 760 tons the equivalent to 165,000 wood burning stoves, burning continuously in Newport.
Nitrogen Oxide NO2 – 700 tons (acid rain, smog)
Carbon Monoxide CO (smog)
Nitric Acid HNO3 (from NO2)
What health hazards caused by these toxic emissions?
The relationship between poor air quality and asthma, heart, and developmental problems is undeniable.
Some of the diseases are: Auto immune disease, Silicosis, Lung Cancer, COPD, Scleroderma, Chronic Pneumonia and Bronchitis
What will the smelter cost?
The Washington Department of Commerce has designated this a single project of statewide significance and awarded HiTest a $300,000 grant . HiTest has stated they will invest $325 million into the facility.
What are the job opportunities?
HiTest states that 150 jobs will be created by the facility, however they have failed to specify the number and average wage of jobs that could actually be filled by local residents.
